Nice things guests have said:"My stay here was soothing to the soul." G.S.Sachdev: premier Indian flute player "Inspirational" Richie Havens, singer songwriter "If you want to know the meaning of Aloha, come to the Dragonfly
Ranch." "****(four star)--recommended" Robert Masters: co-author with Jean Houston "Dragonfly is in the best location on the Big Island--and I ought to know, because I am the map maker." Randy, the map maker "Dragonfly--the place to BE!" June Sleigh, of Sleigh Quarterhorse Ranch "a 'spiritually correct Country Club' with unexpected tropical delights" John Phillip Law, actor "If you've got your 'knickers in a twist,' the Dragonfly is the perfect place to get one's knickers untwististed." Nashira Birch, teenage Dragonfly mascot "I dragged myself into what I affectionately call 'The Fly'--and buzzed away re-energized, only to return again and again." Attorney from California "Thank you for creating such a magical and rejuvenating environment where you have managed to mix spirituality, graciousness and sensuality into the very fabric of everything you do and offer." Mark Polon, writer/teacher "My life energy has certainly accelerated with excitement as a result of my Dragonfly Kona Healing" Amorah Kelly, acupuncturist “It was so peaceful here last night and this morning. I regret
that I booked such a short time at the Dragonfly. After reading your
warning on the internet, I was afraid there might be lots of bugs and
noise. Now that I know how lovely it is here, we’ll return for
a long stay. My ‘sound sensitive’ husband—who LOVES
the quality of your bed and bedding--slept right through the bird chorus
this morning!” Guide Books:"Such a retreat to replenish, relax, to be quiet. I've traveled from the Caribbean, across the U.S. and to Hawaii investigating honeymoon sites for my book. This is my personal favorite, an instant sense of homecoming." Author of 'Sojourns of the Heart,' Linda Smeins The Lonely Planet Guide recommends "this cosmic New Age retreat" that Hidden Hawaii describes as "one of the more unique places to stay--with grounds that are as thick and luxurious as a well-tended jungle...conveying a woodsy, informal feeling." "It's an unusual combination of yesterdays pace and todays conveniences wrapped up in a rambling treehouse of the tropics that epitomize the fantasies of many mainlanders." Birders Guide to Bed and Breakfasts by Peggy Van Hulsteyn. Frommer's Budget Travel Guide denotes the Dragonfly with a star ("worth the extra bucks") saying it has "extraordinary accommodations for travelers and honeymooners, and you'll be happy if you luck into one of these unusual spaces." Hawaii Off the Beaten Path says the Dragonfly "offers an array of designer hippie lodging." Big Island of Hawaii: The Rough Guide by Greg Ward prides itself on describing "characterful inns": Immediately below the Painted Church on the road down to the Pu'uhonua -- and within easy reach of the beaches -- is one of the Big Island's most distinctive B&Bs. A Dragonfly Ranch is a self-styled tropical retreat, geared to alternative travelers, but still offering a high degree of luxury. The owners have a New Age approach and offer traditional Hawaiian massage and aromatherapy among other treatments. The Best of Hawaii by Jocelyn Fujii: The rustic, wholesome quality of Dragonfly Ranch has a decidedly New Age flavor that is enhanced by the various health programs offered. A flower essence practitioner, Barbara offers a "Royal Treatment" program that includes hydrotherapy, music, aromatherapy, and other pamperings. No doubt about it, you will leave here a lot more relaxed, and probably healthier, than when you arrived. Frommer's Guide for Hawaii: The Dragonfly Ranch isn't for everyone: some may find it too rustic or too close to nature. But for those who want to enjoy Hawaii's tropical outdoors and who are thrilled by the island's most unique architecture--structures that literally bring the outdoors inside--this may be the place for you. One thing's for sure: You won't find another place quite like it. The location is ideal, with the Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park just down the road and five bays offering great swimming and diving just minutes away. The place itself, on 2 jungly acres of fruit trees and exotic flowers, truly is a tropical fantasy. The unique rambling house is built around a mammoth century-old monkeypod tree and features indoor/outdoor living with a huge sundeck, a covered lanai, and all sorts of nooks and crannies for dining indoors and out. Guests have full run of the house, including the kitchen. The separate single-standing suites push the fantasy to the extreme. The outdoor Honeymoon Suite lies in a jungle setting with outdoor shower and sunken oval bathtub, fabulous views of Honaunau Bay from the king-size bed, kitchenette, and adjoining redwood room with a queen-size futon; the Writer's Studio, a large 20 by 22 foot suite, has a kitchenette, private bath and outdoor shower, king-size bed, and futon for additional guests. The Dragonfly Ranch is truly extraordinary, but what brings guests back year after year is the hostess, Barbara Moore, who built the ranch more than 20 years ago. She comes from 3 generations of female innkeepers and is trained in massage, aromatherapy, and flower essences. Between Barbara's healing arts and the relaxing setting, you'll find it hard to leave.
